Multi-country assessment of prevalence for female genital schistosomiasis (MAP-FGS)

Frontiers has worked with Unlimit Health, London in the implementation of the Multi-country Assessment of Prevalence for Female Genital Schistosomiasis (MAP-FGS) Study, coordinated by the Task Force for Global Health. Specific services provided by Frontiers included the development of effective training materials, facilitation of training sessions, piloting of training tools in Tanzania, and supporting the refinement and consolidation of these training materials for the remaining countries; Madagascar, Togo, Mali, Senegal Nigeria and Ghana involved in the study, supporting necessary country-specific updates to training materials and the protocol.

MORBID: Morbidity Operational Research for Bilharzia Implementation Decisions Malawi Pilot Project project description

This project aims to determine the infection levels of S. mansoni and S. haematobium that are associated with little or no illness, providing crucial targets for national health programs to measure progress in schistosomiasis control. By focusing on easier-to-measure infection indicators, such as prevalence and intensity, the study seeks to find alternatives to complex methods like ultrasounds, which are not feasible on a large scale. The pilot study will test these methods and gather initial data by comparing villages with high and no schistosomiasis rates. Specifically, it will measure the prevalence and intensity of S. haematobium infection across different age groups (2-6, 7-13, 14-19, and 20+ years) in areas with 0% and >25% prevalence, and assess how schistosomiasis-related health issues are linked to these infection levels.
Frontiers provided full technical support through a co investigator and coordination role.
